“We can go,” Judge says as he appears near us, stepping from the trees silently. “The hoard has passed and we can salvage a car.”

“He is saying that in the lightest of terms,” Martha says from behind us. She moves even quieter that Judge and I feel Max jump slightly at the direction of her voice.

“Why?” I ask and I can’t help but grin at Max’s reaction to the silent woman.

“The hoard didn’t exactly go around things. They just ploughed straight through. It looks like everything has been squashed by a large bulldozer. I wouldn’t believe it happened if it weren’t for the fact I watched it.” She shakes her head.

“There will be a car,” Judge says and I can hear a slight whine in his voice. I look at Max and he seems amused. I wonder then at the dynamic of the couple. It is obvious that it’s not going to be the same as ours. If anything I have a feeling that Martha is going to lead. I can’t help but give a small grin. Judge is definitely going to have his hands full.

Slowly Max starts to walk toward the road. I can tell the direction because of the smell. The Gone stink.

“It’s getting worse,” Max says, as if reading my mind.

“What?” I ask as I push past the vegetation. I notice that the only sounds I can hear are Max and myself, yet from the corner of my eye I can see Judge and Martha moving silently through the wood. For a moment I am so stunned that I stop.

Max carries on and then abruptly stops and turns. He sees where I am looking. “They are silent.”

I simply nod.

“The smell from the Gone is getting worse.”

I think of the zombie-like state the people are in and I shrug. “Personal hygiene is not a priority.”

“No, it’s more than that.”

He starts heading to the road again.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“The smell is like off meat,” he says and scents the air.

I do the same and he’s right. It is more than the smell of unwashed bodies. It’s the sweet smell of corruption. I once tried to make a pond in my back garden but I didn’t have the right plastic lining so I used a thick clear plastic doubled. I didn’t really think about it but after I was finished the pond and swamp area looked beautiful. It wasn’t long before I had a crop of insects and frogs living there. Then one day I realised that everything had gone. Even the plants had died. There was nothing left except water, and that had looked oily. At first I thought that some sort of rubbish had blown in but after a while I began to smell something. It was sweet and bitter at the same time. It clung to the air and made the back of my throat itch, forcing me to swallow a gag reflex. I had started to dismantle that pond, and as I had the smell had become worse.
